Leaf structural traits of two Restinga plant species with different resistance pattern to iron toxicity

چکیده

Iron mining activities are a source of particulate iron, which contaminates soil and plants Restinga biome (Brazil). To investigate the possible effects iron toxicity to Ipomoea pes-caprae Canavalia rosea leaves, were submitted different exposure times (12, 36, 108 228 hours) concentrations (0.5 or 150 mg L-1, Fe2+ as FeSO4.7H2O). After hours C. leaves chlorotic while I. presented venal chlorosis bronzing after hours, both from excess treatment. The anatomical alterations in more intense appeared earlier than rosea, 36 exposed excess. leaf epidermal cells organization, size shape for species epicuticular wax was altered rupture occurred close stomata. positive staining presence tissues matches with damaged areas indicating direct toxicity. most severe symptoms resistant one. results support that over time, emission matter may negatively impact ecological succession biodiversity Restinga.

Are leaf physiological traits related to leaf water isotopic enrichment in restinga woody species?

During plant-transpiration, water molecules having the lighter stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen evaporate and diffuse at a faster rate through the stomata than molecules having the heavier isotopes, which cause isotopic enrichment of leaf water. Although previous models have assumed that leaf water is well-mixed and isotopically uniform, non-uniform stomatal closure, promoting different e...

Functional leaf traits of understory species: strategies to different disturbance severities.

The specific leaf area (SLA) has been related to environmental disturbances, showing a positive correlation between the disturbances intensities and SLA in a plant community. These studies, however, assessed the responses of plant community as a whole, neglecting species attributes, such as the position in the vertical stratum of forests. Considering the importance of SLA to understand forest e...

Ecological differentiation in xylem cavitation resistance is associated with stem and leaf structural traits.

Cavitation resistance is a critical determinant of drought tolerance in tropical tree species, but little is known of its association with life history strategies, particularly for seasonal dry forests, a system critically driven by variation in water availability. We analysed vulnerability curves for saplings of 13 tropical dry forest tree species differing in life history and leaf phenology. ...

Iron requirement and iron uptake from various iron compounds by different plant species.

The Fe requirements of four monocotyledonous plant species (Avena sativa L., Triticum aestivum L., Oryza sativa L., Zea mays L.) and of three dicotyledonous species (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill., Cucumis sativus L., Glycine maxima (L.) Merr.) in hydroponic cultures were ascertained. Fe was given as NaFe-EDDHA chelate (Fe ethylenediamine di (O-hydroxyphenylacetate). I found that the monocotyled...
